Charles was born in Tuatapere [Port Craig?] to parents Joseph Charles Davis and Violet Mary [nee Sangster], and had four siblings. He married Patricia Howell in 1948 and they had 6 [7?] children. He worked as a sawmill hand, then as a carpenter in Invercargill - a trade he earned attending night classes at Southland Technical College after the war. He also worked for a time as a fisherman and on the Roxburgh hydro dam. He loved muttonbirding and playing the piano.
