Biographical / Historical

HAMILTON BURN SCHOOL - orignally land for this school was set aside on the Waterloo Road, about 3.2km from the site eventually used. No reason for the changed location is given in the School Committee Minutes. The first teachers lived at the school. Some had homes locally and other boarded with local families. The School was used for elections, socials, concerts and meetings. It also housed the district mail boexes from 1904 until the Matuku Post office was built. Pages 195-8.

Hamilton Burn Teachers 1899-1938 are listed. Also Surnames of First Day Pupils, 4/4/1899: Kearney (5); Roy (2); Chewings(1); Smith (3); Prenderville (2). On Day 2 Edwin Mewton came and on Day 4, John Mewton. The eledest 'child' was Margaret Prendervill who was said to be 'going on 17'. By the end of the year,the Roll included these surnames: Jenkins, Pidgeon, Pagan, Mitchell and natta. 1900 Enrollees: Waddel (2); Smith; Robinson (4). The last names recorded were D.I.Gllagher and A.R.Felton in 1938. The school was consolidated with Mossburn on 21/11/1938. In total, 200 children attended Hamilton Burn School during its existence.
