Winton School

The first Winton School was opened c.1868 by Mr. Gideon F. de Joux and operated out of a large room in the local Police Barracks (a school holiday was declared if the room was required for police business). In 1871 a general meeting was held to form the first school committee. The first Committee members were: Chair- Mr Sproull; Secy/Treasurer - Mr R. Cameron; Committee- Messrs T. McWilliam, D. McLeaod, J. Thomson, Wm Keith and Wm Lindsay....

A new masters residence was completed in 1871 (the old one being in very bad repair), and in 1872 a tender was accepted to build a schoolhouse. Land had been set aside as a school reserve, and can be seen on early 1863/4 survey maps. It was bordered by Great North Road, Eglinton and Clyde Streets.

The architect was Mr. Kerr and the building tender was won by Mr. Mair at £157/15/-. The building was a single-room wooden structure. Additions to the structure were made in 1878, 1886 and 1893. A new brick school building was completed in 1919. The school Dental clinic appeared in 1920, a library in 1935 and swimming baths in 1938.

The school site accomodated a District High School briefly from 1901-1908, and then again from 1927 to 1964. The site reverted to just primary again (Winton Primary School) when Central Southland College opened in 1965. At this point additions and re-modelling were done at the school. Manual Training facilities, a science laboratory, and an admin block were created, and the old teacher's residence was demolished. In 1970 there were plans to build an intermediate school near Central Southland College which did not eventuate.
