Biographical / Historical

In June 1886, Southland Education Board was requested to open a school in the Glenorchy District. This was agreed to, provided the residents provided a suitable building at no cost to the Board. SEB Minutes record that Mr N.N. Browne was appointed teacher in May 1888, but the register of teachers names Mr John Meiklejohn, from Mt Crighton, as commencing duty on 17 June 1888. The school was built in four stages, with extensions to cater for increased roll and living quarters for the teachers. While the school as known as 'Rees Valley', the school district was officially 'Glenorchy'.

Roll Decline caused the school to close on 31/1/1938, and the remaining pupils to be 'carried' to Glenorchy. There is a list of Rees Valley teachers, 1888-1938, on p.9.
