"SOUTHLAND GENERAL LABOURERS' UNION".

This item is a large, thick Minute Book, containing records from 14/7/1957 to 24/10/1978. During this period the Union was involved in issues relating to the construction of the smelter at Tiwai Point (first mentioned 6/6/1961); the use of non-union labour at various plants/firms; political action during the period; an interest in the concerns of the members of the Pest Destruction Industry and the general safety and welfare of all members.

This Union also supported a number of organisations, donating to the Institute for the Blind; Leper Fund; Affiliation with WEA; National Union of Churches, and supporting Community Organisations like UN Appeal for Children; Hospital Library Appeal; Plunket; Old Age Pensioners'Assn and Health Stamps. The Union also had a Representative on the Southland Technical College Board of Managers.
