Overview

This interview was recorded as part of the Gorge Road Project. In this interview Robert tells of his family history dating back to grandfather, father and fathers siblings. Robert attended Gorge Road School and Southland Boys High school. He was an axe man representing NZ in 1962 and played rugby for Southern Clubs. He goes onto describe the runnings and workings of Niederers Flax Mill. His family developed their farm at Gorge-Kaupuka South Road. Robert was a contract hay baler for 25 years. He goes on to tell of fundraising for Gorge Road School with Stewart Stevens, the 1989 combined Gorge Road and District Jubilee, marriage and family; his involvement in building Gorge Road Country Club and the closing of the dairy factory and the cheese making process.
