Overview
Ron, born 1937, grew up in Mandeville, near Gore. He is one of 10 children in a close knit family. His parents were not well off— rabbits were a valuable source of family income. Music was a big part of family life. About half the family played musical instruments - Ron later played in dance bands. After attending the local primary school and secondary school in Gore, Ron began work as a labourer in the early 1950's. In 1952 his brother helped him get a job at Fleming & Co where he has worked ever since. Not long after he began working there Ron was offered a job in the engineering department. He went on to complete training in both the engineering and electrical areas and in 1972 was appointed Chief Engineer.
During his time at Flemings Ron has seen many changes, including changes in ownership, management, products, food safety standards and technology. In 1979 he oversaw the major Mill remodel. In 1982 he worked with other staff to erect the Sergeant Dan icon outside the factory. Ron is currently Technical milling engineer. He plans to retire early 1999 to the family cottage at Kaka Point.
