Overview
In this interview Rex recalls his family history of Māori, Pacific, island European lineage. He discusses farming practices and the expansion his father made to the original farm he inherited from his mother. He also talks about the family sawmill. His grandfather was the first person to export timber by train. Rex describes his childhood home, sports, education and his grandfather subsidising income by going fishing and selling the catch. He also gives a background history of Riverton/Colac Bay area of the time (1920s-1930s). He goes on to discuss his own farming career, his involvement in the community through the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Southland Youth Trust and Hospital Board. He went on to become MP for Awarua for the National Party. He recalls his contribution to trade during this time, going on many trade missions to the US, Britain, France and Germany and visiting Iran in the 1980’ to create business for NZ through halal meat exports. Later he talks about his education including tertiary education at Lincoln and winning a scholarship to travel to the USA. On returning to NZ he details occupations he did to be able to purchase his Colac Bay farm, which he achieved through a ballot in 1955. He recalls meeting his wife and their life. He retired to Queenstown where he was President of Lions Garden Club, Historical Society and Golfers Association. He concludes by talking about the Round Hill Goldmine.
