Dear Jane, Just a line or two to let you know I am still going strong on the road to that country everyone likes so well & have been marching for two weeks & goodness only knows when we will reach it. We have been having a good time coming through this country & the people go a bit mad on the Digger. We were always told Belgium was starving & all that but of what we have seen it is far from it. You can buy cakes which have plenty of sugar o & in them, far better than you can buy in England & all the people are jolly well & not one wee bit starved. Of course things are a good price but still it’s there to be

had so it must be in the country & the old Hun could not have been so hard as they make out, though they all say he was no bon but some would say that to please us. They are a great people & are not a bit shy about asking you for stuff such as fags & bread but we don’t give a great lot I can tell you. Fritz blew up all the bridges but they are getting them all up again now. Jove he made a mess of things for a long way back but where we are now is all as it used to be as he just had to leave these places. A French chap who could speak English told us he was in a very bad way at the last soldiers in open mutiny & killing their officers & very short of bread & absolutely tired out. Must stop now and hope you are all well at home. Love to all. Yours Doie
