Biographical / Historical

Both buildings in the photo were burned down October 18, 1871. The bank section remained vacant until Abram Watson leased the site and built his ironmonger premises there.

The building on the far left was Bank of New Zealand's first building, built in 1862. On the far right, the building is a butcher shop.

Bank of Otago

The Head Colonial Office for the Bank of Otago was in Dunedin. It advertised an intention to establish a branch in Invercargill in January 1864 in the premises of Calder, Blackstock and Co, merchants (see also photo 73). The bank made alterations to the frontage of the building (squared it off). The lane with the picket fence leads to the Albion Hotel.

The Bank of Otago opened for business on site on 1 February 1864, under the management of Mr A. Jamieson.

See also photo 38.

Hunter and Hawkshaw

On the west side of the section 19, in 1869, family grocers Frederick and Hunter were occupying the shop beside the bank owned by furniture maker Mr Dallwig. In June 1870, Frederick left the partnership, and the business became Hunter and Hawkshaw. They made additions and improvements to the building.

The 1871 fire destroyed the building. Hunter and Hawkshaw dissolved their partnership in 1872 and David Hunter continued trading as a merchant on his own account in Dee Street. Hawkshaw left the province for Dunedin. In recent times, section 19 was occupied by Hannahs shoe shop.
