Biographical / Historical
In 1889, William Ross led the creation of the Southland Flax and Fibre Company on Tweed Street. He then established the Southland Implement and Machine Works Manager in 1891, at the corner of Nith and Tyne streets, opposite the Otepuni Gardens. In 1892 it was renamed the Southland Rope and Twine Company, until 1895-1896 when it merged with “Donaghy and Rope and Twine Company” from Dunedin and the “Auckland Rope and Twine Company”. The Invercargill branch had closed by 1912.
