Biographical / Historical
James Blyth who was born near Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland in 1841, arrived at Lyttelton in 1864, and died at Winton in 1892.
His son Peter Alexander Blyth, was born at Prebbleton near Christchurch in 1869. He was an implement maker, general blacksmith, coach builder and wheelwright, with a business (founded by his father in 1886) on the main road of Winton. He was the secretary of the Winton Brass Band, and a member of the Winton Borough Council. He married Jessie Baird in 1902 and had sons Robert, Rutherford, Douglas, and Alexander, and daughter Marjorie. He died in 1947.
Born in 1909, Robert Ewen Blyth (Ewen) was in the Armoured Brigade of the 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force during World War II. He farmed at Gap Road Winton, married Joyce Pannett in 1946, and had three children Stephen, Brian, and Janice. He died in 1993.
