Biographical / Historical

Frederick (Fred) George Hall-Jones, OBE, was born in 1891 near Timaru. He was a star student and athlete at Timaru Boys High and later completed a BA and LLB at Victoria University. During World War I he served as a sergeant major and fought at Gallipoli, before being wounded at Quinn's Post.

He married Marjorie Carno Thomson Bush (granddaughter of surveyor John Turnbull Thomson) and had four sons. He worked as a lawyer in Invercargill, and was involved in many local affairs including the RSA, Cancer Campaign Society, Boy Scouts, Rotary Club, and serving on the Invercargill City Council from 1929 to 1931.

Fred Hall-Jones collected historical records of Southland and was an author himself. His books include ‘King of the Bluff’, ‘Historical Southland’ and ‘Invercargill Pioneers’. A chairman of the Southland Historical Society, he helped promote Southland heritage by erecting plaques around the district. He also had an interest in both art and horticulture.

Mr Hall-Jones was awarded the OBE in 1958 for his services in recording the history of Southland and service to the community. His wife Marjorie passed away in 1967, and his son Frederick William (Ted) during WWII. Fred Hall-Jones died on 28 January 1982, survived by three sons Geoffrey, Gerard and John.
