Happy Valley School
On the 22 August 1917, Happy Valley School opened its doors for 15 students. Over its lifespan the school remained small, rarely exceeding its initial numbers. Miss McKinnon, Mr Young and Miss Cloughley are the three longest serving teachers.
Similar to many other district schools, Happy Valley was used by local residents for gatherings and dances. Its community importance is likely the reason behind its ten-foot extension in 1921.
The school’s location and settler origins caused other issues, such as, a lack of suitable boarding rooms for teachers. Miss Irene McKenzie rode four miles every day from Te Tua in order to teach the pupils. Sheep also caused issues in the school yard, being recorded in committee meeting notes as occasionally taking over the playground more than the children.
Upon its closure in 1937 only four pupils remained. Happy Valley educated 115 children during its operation.
