The community singing movement had it's origins in America but soon spread beyond those shores. The idea behind the community singing movement, as explained by Mr. Tano Fama, was to "make people more cheerful and to send them away with glad hearts so that they could better face the trials of the day and so that they would feel more inclined to help a lame dog over the stile if the opportunity offered" (S.Times, 9th June 1922).
The first "sing" in Invercargill was held at the Municipal Theatre on Thursday 8th June 1922, between 12.30 and 1.30pm. A second "sing" was to be conducted on Friday 9th June 1922 between 12.30 and 1.30pm.
