St Mary's Anglican Church Riverton

It was in 1860 that Anglican Church members in Riverton first met to discuss the building of a church. In 1862 the church was constructed, with finishing touches such as the Church tower and a fence completed by 1869. The first vicar was Rev W F Oldham. The building was enlarged in 1874, and by 1881 it was decided that a new church was needed.

The new church was built in a more central position on land donated by John Mills. Completed in 1902, it was designed by Invercargill architects John Mackenzie and Edmund Richardson Fitz Wilson, in Carpenter Gothic style. This is a charming style where the elements such as the bracing and framing become design features. Overlooking the esturary it is a prominent landmark in Riverton.

The church spire was covered in copper in 1966 and a new vestry added in 1967. It is a heritage category 2 listed building and is still in use as of 2019.
