5 Mrs. ANN TURNER, LOWBURN No. 2 R.D., CROMWELL. Born: 6.12.1890

21 Father’s Name: ALFRED CLARK Mother’s Name: HARRIET EDWELL

32 Mother was 15 when she came to NEW ZEALAND

39 Sailing Ship took one week to cross the EQUATOR. Had to draw into land for one week – no wind.

48 Mother taught the kiddies on the boat during this time. Mother came from BERKSHIRE, Father came from SUSSEX. Landed at DUNEDIN, took one week to come up to LOWBURN. 74 Father married in ENGLAND, had two children. Wife died. Then married HARRIET EDWELL, his HOUSEKEEPER.

86 Big Flood washed house down the river. Broke up at CROMWELL BRIDGE.

93 Cattle and haystacks washed away.

107 Lived in an upturned cart under SUGAR-LOAF HILL for a week.

113 Isolated. Could not get over the five mile or the LOWBURN for a week.

128 ANN’S Mother had made a big batch of mushroom ketchup put it into bottles, made tunnels in the bank and stored the bottles in these. All was washed away.

170 ANN’S brother, CHARLES CLARK, member of the GRENADIER GUARDS was awarded a MEDAL FOR BRAVERY IN N.Z. for a rescue of a man in shark infested waters. In 1903 he fell and gashed his abdomen while rabbiting on MOUNT PISA. He sewed up a 4 inch wound with his boot lace.

213 The flood ANN talked about was the GREAT MOLYNEUX FLOOD of 1878

251 ANN’S Parents came out on the SCIMITAR SAILING SHIP.

270 ANN and ALFRED’S children were: LOUISA ELIZABETH ANN, MABEL EDITH, CLARENCE ALFRED, MARGARET ADA, MYRTLE VERA, ALICE MARY, EDWIN MARQUIS, DORIS, ALLAN LESLIE, RITA GRACE, FRANCIS NOEL, ERIC RAYMOND, and JOYCE NOELINE.

415 JOYCE was the only child born in hospital and the only one ANN breast fed.

460 Father smoked a Square Pipe

470 ANN went to MIDDLE SCHOOL in INVERCARGILL stayed with a married sister who was very home sick for LOWBURN and the family.

493 MR. MCCAFFEY was the PRINCIPAL of MIDDLE SCHOOL

581 After leaving school at 13 years, ANN worked for MR AND MRS SCAIFE on PISA STATION for over four years until the SCAIFE’S sold the station.

620 MT. PISA HOMESTEAD had 14 rooms. Shearer’s came from AUSTRALIA.

772 Card from MR and MRS SCAIFE’S grandson.

44 He was in charge of RABBITING GANGS.

139 ANN recited Poetry and Prayer by heart

230 Two children had DIPHTHERIA. ANN isolated and nursed them at home.

251 Neighbour had 8 children with DIPHTHERIA

383 ANN has 7 of her 13 children still living, 54 of her 62 Grandchildren still living, 121 of her 125 Great Grandchildren still living,49 of her 55 Great, Great Grandchildren still living.

35 ANN went to hospital once with fluid on her lungs and again in 1982 she had GALL STONES and GALLBLADDER removed.

91 ANN has auburn hair, never wears glasses and no walking stick.

115 ANN knitted a jersey for TELETHON in 1989. It was sold for $100.00

195 Lent BALDY the horse to be used at BURNHAM CAMP during WORLD WAR 2- returned half starved.

280 ANN and son, CLARENCE had a house fire in 1987.

379 ANN’S husband died in 1976

411 Her sister was run over by a HAWKER’S van with steel wheels, no rubber then, 7 ribs were broken. DOCTOR plastered them up at home.

570 CLARENCE was wounded in EGYPT after peace was declared by a bomb dropping near him. He had his leg amputated in EGYPT.

727 ANN has been as far away as WAIMATE.

Side B 2 ANN opened the LOWBURN HOSPITAL and HOME called RIPPONBURN. She was invited to do this by the DUNEDIN METHODIST MISSION.
