MCCAULEY, Enid Ann

Interviewer: Judith Thomas

Focus of interview is Enid’s life – a hard life – sight impaired – always almost totally blind.

Born – early memory old house (describes) – help – swing bridge – river – shop – George Street.

Mum – five of us in a bed – airing beds. Dad a farm manager – horses and sugar. Stephen sick. Mum sick – bike – Doctor – knitting – butter from house cow – baby brother Stephen.

School – sight not good. Grandmother – sale yards – trucks – noise – no sport – knitting – secondary school.

Lamond Motors. First Church – missing at both ends of the day. Waianiwa shop for sweets.

St Catherine’s – sewing frocks (June Mum’s pet) – brother Stephen.

Clinton – Dunedin Hospital. Cataracts – Italian doctor – first time being able to see. Operations meant fifteen years of good sight.

Work at Railway Hotel in Otautau – owners’ family – circus – sports day at Otautau – feeding the crowd. Work hours 2/3 years Crown Hotel – meals, polishing cutlery jobs. Drunk cook with wooden leg (hotel family).

Meeting Geoffrey – pictures – barn dance – Uncle Jim’s car – Uncle Sylvy – three bridges – first footing – dances – ‘not going over bridge’ – engaged – Aunty Rose Lawson – marriage – church rules/lessons. Priest and Riverton nuns.

Aunties – Peg and Kitty - mince and tatties.

Wedding day – catering – Hall Otautau - honeymoon Te Anau – “Just Married” – pots of confetti.

Queenstown – mini bus trip to Skippers – children – Douglas (eldest child) – maternity home – ‘playing house’. Milk run/truck – Spinners Guild.

Subsequent children: Grant, Mark, Beverley, Tania.

Lands and Survey ballot – farm at Tuatapere – lambs and cows – the digger – managing boys – managing her eyesight. “I’m busy”.

Long drop. Steve Kokay’s (Hungarian) hut. Washing water. In-laws’ house – an ‘awful life’ – another old house (describes).

Geoff died – Dr Elder – cat – (Geoff asthma, died at 42).

When Enid 34 – shift to town. McQuarrie Street – Glengarry – piles checked – walked everywhere.

Peter McCauley – driver for Blind Foundation – friends – proposed – Kirkwood Lane – 22 years with Peter – a great help.

Beverley found a room at Peacehaven “the big room’ – moving in with help from grandchildren. Douglas in Hamilton – Grant and Mark in Australia. 80th birthday at Peacehaven Hall.

Explains Retinitis pigmentosis

Walker relatives. Thompson – Thwaites bootmaker. Herons Brothers Honey. Names grandchildren and great grandchild.
