TRACK 1

00.40 BORN 3rd OCTOBER 1935

01.22 Born in TIMARU but lived in WASHDYKE, Father ARTHUR STANLEY LOACH, mother ALICE IRENE GOODMAN. She was youngest of 6. 5 girls and 1 boy. Siblings were; MARY, IVAN, MARGE, DAPHNE and DOREEN and NGAIRE.

02.20 Picked up by teacher to go to FAIRVIEW SCHOOL.

03.17 Used to track the SHEEP and TRAPPED RABBITS on farm (400 acres)

04.20 Brother accidentally knocked his sister out when he was boxing.

04.40 DAPHNE died recently. DAPHNE was an outsider in the family.

05.20 Did CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL for HIGH SCHOOL.

05.30 Got a job in a grocers for years.

06.04 Biked from ORTON to ORARI to look after her sister MARY who had had miscarriages.

06.14 Met her husband at a dance when she was 16.

06.21 She was in the AIRFORCE.

07.55 She was paid 2 pounds a week when at the grocery store. She put 1 pound way and gave 1 pound to her mother.

08.00 She had saved 500 pounds when she married.

08.41 Dances where at Orari.

09.50 Liked working at the supermarket.

11.00 Her second boss acted in an inappropriate way to her. She then applied to the AIRFORCE.

12.16 Teacher at primary school was MISS TIZARD.

13.18 SIREN was used in 1940 at school.

14.28 Would help with the HORSES on the FARM.

TRACK 2

00.01 Fell on nails on the farm.

00.30 Happy childhood.

01.53 Father had to work outside the farm.

03.07 400 acres on the farm. They had sheep on the farm.

03.35 She used to get 1 and 6p for the rabbit skins each

04.17 Started catching rabbits when she was 14.

05.05 She was the only one who learnt by CORRESPONDENCE. Her sister DOREEN went to high school.

06.50 Saw an ad in the newspaper for the Airforce and applied.

07.12 Had to travel to AUCKLAND by train.

07.36 Got into trouble when she had just arrived.

08.50 Father was sad to see he go to Auckland.

09.30 Stayed at the airforce base in WHENUAPAI.

10.10 Worked in the TECHNICAL LIBRARY.

12.22 Brian followed her to Auckland and they were married after 3 years. Parents had to give permission as she was only 20.

14.01 Turquoise dress for her wedding.

14.55 Brian worked in a factory.

TRACK 3

00.32 Kept working after marriage and when she was pregnant.

01.10 Injured her arm in a roller when she was trying to untangle a sheet.

02.30 Had an operation on both breasts to remove abscesses.

03.42 Was able to save money when working.

04.00 Been overseas 58 times.

05.14 AIRFORCE NUMBER 77741. Passed exams to become LEADING AIRCRAFT WOMAN. Never tried for anything else as she got married and had children

05.50 Entertainment in Auckland. MOVIES, DANCES. Got home late one night and a girlfriend and her climbed in though a window.

TRACK 4

00.44 Moved to KAITANGATA, where Brian’s parents were. Stayed with them for a year until found own place.

01.02 Found a house in Exmouth Street. Two Bedrooms and 4 Children in 5 and half years. Wash house and toilet were outside.

02.08 Used to go to CABARETS – get a babysitter in.

02.43 Bought a new house across the road. 03.00 Stephen Robert Stanley, Carolyn Anne, Leona Joy, Sharon Marie, were her children.

04.20 Did not hit her children.

04.52 Brian was an ALCOHOLIC. She left him a couple of times.

TRACK 5

00.13 Brian’s father was a MINER, mother was a talented PIANIST.

02.14 Her Father died when he was 80.

03.29 Brian’s parents had other children, NEVILLE, SELMA, MERVYN as well as Brian.

05.35 She grew Begonias in Invercargill.

05.40 Children went to local school, Balclutha apart from Sharon. Sharon boarded at a school in DUNEDIN.

06.00 Had an ACCIDENT with a machine and her HAND. At WINWOOD SKINS.

07.07 Taken by boss to BALCLUTHA hospital then by ambulance to DUNEDIN. Had a prosthesis fitted.

07.50 Ran a 2nd hand BOOKSHOP in KAITANGATA.

09.48 Left Brian for a time. Had a bookshop in YTHAN St, Invercargill. Bookshop was NGAIRE’s BOOKSHOP.

11.30 Jobs she had had, skinning place, bookshop.

13.30 Received $15.5k COMPENSATION.

14.12 Sharon helped her set up the Invercargill Bookshop.

TRACK 6

00.12 Tried to find job at place where skins had been sent from WINWOOD SKINS. But was turned down because of INJURY. Mother-in-law insisted she had to get a job.

00.15 Brought her books down to Invercargill.

TRACK 7

00.17 Life in the bookshop.

01.17 Different types of books.

02.40 Brian was a truck driver.

03.32 Shop was on Ythan and Janet Streets.

04.00 Life at the BOOKSHOP. Shop is about 140 years old.

05.00 Bad experiences with local children in the last few years.

06.50 TRIPPING. 58 times overseas. Brian would look after the shop.

07.30 Three children in Australia.

10.12 Travelled to SINGAPORE, VANUATU and other islands. PEARL HARBOUR.

12.03 Brian died 4 years ago. CANCER.

13.11 She has a condition only 75 people have. On a lot of pills and chemotherapy. Blood transfusions. Had to sell the house and shop. Gave the books to the ROTARY CLUB.

0.03 Daughter Carolyn wouldn’t let customers swap books.

01.00 Now living in BALCLUTHA.
