CARTER, William Jeffrey (Jeff) interviewed by Morag Forrester

 Record Group — Box: 54
Identifier: H0572

Overview

From an early age, Jeff Carter's driving ambition was to spend his time hunting deer, rabbits and possums that roamed the hills and mountain passes of southern New Zealand. Despite being cajoled into taking up a more stable occupation in motor mechanics, it was hunting that proved the enduring option especially as it developed into a financially lucrative one in the early 1970s. Bounty was to be had in the venison recovery industry in Fiordland and the reserves and basins adjacent to the national park at a time when thousands of deer were being brought out to processing factories for shipment overseas. Eventually becoming crew for some of the Alpine Helicopters pilots, Jeff’s work overtook any other interests for several years. By the time the bust followed the boom years, he had earned enough money to invest in a small deer farm in the Te Anau area, which he still runs today. While this interview is not a full oral history recording, it does touch on some of the benefits and hazards that were involved for someone working as a shooter/gutter in an industry that was as remarkable for its pioneering activity as it was for its brief duration.
