Overview
This interview was commissioned by Women's Division of Federated Farmers for a project entitled Pioneer Women. Mrs Jessie Yorke describes her background, with a very detailed description of her grandmother, including dress and knowledge; effect of World War I on her family; dairy her parents bought in Napier - use of ice box and the ice man and recalls her father making ice cream. Describes education; Auckland Training College; teaching career at Muriwai Beach and at Quarry Hills as a sole-charge teacher with details of teachers pay. She talks about marriage in Auckland 1929; life in Waikawa; farm life at Winton; children being taught by Correspondence School. Jessie describes attitude to home life and interests after marriage at Womens Division, Farmers Union. Mentions importance of Sale day as a day out. Other topics covered include: Influenza epidemic (1918); Infantile paralysis (poliomyelitis) and closing of schools; K G (Lawrence Kennedy Greening) milking machine and being self sufficient during Depression.
