Biographical / Historical
Caption from Southland Times, 10 December 1924, p.17: A strange sight. The scow “Waihopai” being built in Tay Street by Mr A. H. Puettelkow, owner of the Provincial Hotel. Mr Puettelkow also built the “Danzig,” named after the town in Pomerania, where he came from. In the early days Invercargill had a vigorous boat-building industry, but the change to steel made the prolongation of this activity impossible, though small craft are still constructed at intervals.
See the Southland Times, 13th November, 1867, p.2 for details of it's launch.
The Danzig (photo 6) and Waihopai were launched into the Invercargill Estuary and Puettelkow engaged them for coastal freight service.
