Biographical / Historical
In July 1919, Invercargill experienced a series of parades and events to celebrate the end of World War One, called the “Peace Celebrations”. It began on Saturday 19th July, with a procession of trades, organisations and schools, beginning from the corner of Conon and Tay Streets to the former Showgrounds, culminating with an evening torchlight procession from Tay Street to Queen’s Park for festivities and a fireworks exhibition. Sunday was “Thanksgiving Day”, commemorated by a united churches service.
The above image shows Monday’s Military Parade, especially for members of the Defence Force and returned veterans. This march began on Tay Street, travelling north on Dee Street, ending at the Showgrounds, followed by sporting events and an evening social for the soldiers. Tuesday, the final day of celebrations, was devoted to local footballers who had died during the war, with a procession of football clubs and schools to Rugby Park, then by a series of games and social activities.
