Biographical / Historical
Edmund Cowper and Henry Wilson, ironmongers, began their business in 1868. They were located on Dee Street, next to the Prince of Wales Hotel. The business ended in 1891.
To the right of the “Prince of Wales Livery” is the Prince of Wales Hotel. This was replaced in 1912 by the “Grand Hotel”. The alleyway still exists, and is currently named “Pork Pie Lane”.
Robert Sloan (1809 – 1882) and his wife, Margaret, emigrated to New Zealand in 1862 from Scotland. A bootmaker by trade, he established a business in Invercargill with three of their sons, John, Thomas and William. William also established the Sloan Theatre, south of his father’s shop on Dee Street. The business continued as “Sloan Bros and Co.”, then under William until 1906.
