Biographical / Historical

Situated west of First Presbyterian Church, the buildings were located where the Southern Institute of Technology is currently situated. Cornelius O’Hara relocated his boot-making manufactory from Dee Street to Tay in 1854 after a major fire the previous year. Caleb Froggatt (1846-1926) began his butchery shop on Tay Street in 1868, later branching into groceries and a brick business. Invercargill’s first Odd Fellow Lodge opened in 1860... on Dee street, moving to their Tay Street hall sometime after 1868. Invercargill had three Lodge memberships by the 1880s – the “Shamrock, Rose and Thistle”, “St George” and “Hearts of Oak”.
