Biographical / Historical
City of Dunedin was a paddle steamer that arrived in the colony in November 1863 to work the coastal ports under the captaincy of Captain James Parker Boyd.
The vessel was owned by John Jones and John Cargill of Dunedin.
This picture shows the ship at Invercargill on its way from Melbourne to Dunedin around the 13 May 1864. While docked, many citizens of the town took advantage of viewing her. Invercargill does not appear to have been on the ship’s regular coastal runs.
The ship was wrecked in Cook Strait near Cape Terawhiti on 20 May 1865 while sailing from Wellington to Hokitika. There were no survivors.
There is an account of her arrival in Otago in the Otago Daily Times, 25 November 1863, p.4.
