Biographical / Historical
Situated in the southern half of Block I between Esk and Spey streets, the Southland Club was built in 1863 by W.A. Maharg, under local architect E.J. Sanders, amalgamating with the Invercargill Club in December. Immediately to its right is Hare, Pratt and Co Produce, Wine, Spirit Provision Merchants.
North of the Club is Sloane’s Theatre (shown with tower). Built c.1864, in a pseudo-classical style, it was the town Exchange before Robert and Thomas Sloan turned it into a theatre in 1878. Later it was converted into Broad Small’s department store, and is now the premises of the Invercargill Public Library.
