Biographical / Historical
Early in February 1865, Donald Matheson started his business of grocer and merchant in partnership with Donald Cameron. The business name appears in import advertisements between 1865 and 1875, but there are no classified advertisements found specifically for Matheson and Cameron.
Donald Cameron, “late of Matheson and Cameron”, left on a return trip to Scotland in 1872, so the partnership had obviously dissolved by this date (Southland Times, 13 February 1872, p.2).
Matheson & Cameron became Matheson & Co in 1875. Donald Matheson worked in the business for 30 years before retiring in 1895. The business continued under the management of his sons Messrs F. J. Matheson and J. Matheson (Southern Cross, 2 February 1895, p.8).
Donald Lachlan Matheson was born on 27th May 1834, in Plocton, Lochalsh, Rosshire, Scotland. His father, Captain Farquhar Matheson, a ship owner and mariner, was drowned in the same year in which his son Donald was born. On the 4th July 1852, young Matheson sailed from Liverpool for Melbourne in the famous ship Marco Polo. Mr Matheson found Victoria in the height of the "gold" excitement, and a rich find having been made near Ballarat, Mr Matheson decided to try his luck there. Mr Matheson landed in Dunedin in 1862 from the City of Hobart, and on the 5th of March in the same year reached Invercargill, where, at that time, there was very little to see. Early in February 1865, Mr Matheson started the business of grocer and merchant. His store stood very near, if not exactly on, the site of the shop now occupied by the firm of Matheson & Co (Excerpts from Obituary, Southland Times, 14 September 1903, p.2).
