Biographical / Historical

John Robert Cuthbertson, 1834-1882, created this painting in watercolour soon after he arrived in the Invercargill settlement in 1859. The buildings line the Otepuni bank, with the Taurakitewaru forest in the background. Previously a runholder in Waiau, Cuthbertson arrived in Invercargill in 1859 and became a partner with David Macrorie in his sale yards and agency firm. After being editor of the Southland Times for a period, Cuthbertson entered the local government, serving on the Southland Provincial Council, represented the township in Parliament, then became Mayor from 1876 until 1877.
