Invercargill Middle School
Opening as Invercargill Grammar School in 27 January 1873, there were 180 pupils enrolled. The roll grew quickly and was up to 470 by the end of the first year. Individual subjects were charged for as were pens and ink. Separate playgrounds and classrooms were provided for males and females, with "no mingling" strictly enforced. The first headmaster was Mr. Andrew Fleming.
Overcrowding problems were lessened by the opening of a high school for secondary students, as well as South School in 1879. The school was also known as Invercargill District High School and Invercargill Central, before becoming Invercargill Middle in 1885. Among the building changes to occur were a new wing added in 1917, a new infant school in 1925, and new classrooms in 1966.
The School is still in operation in 2019, and caters for Years 1 - 6.
